The first step towards an understanding of why the study and knowledge of algorithms are so important is to define exactly what we mean by an algorithm. According to the popular algorithms textbook Introduction to Algorithms (Second Edition by Thomas H. Cormen, Charles E. Leiserson, Ronald L. Rivest, Clifford Stein):
"An algorithm is any well-defined computational procedure that takes some value, or set of values, as input and produces some value, or set of values as output."
In other words, algorithms are like road maps for accomplishing a given, well-defined task.
Programming is as vast and diverse as there are programs. Algorithmic is an important part of the domain and can be a good asset to learn how programming really help solve problems if you learn it. Learning it will open your mind to certain problems you could encounter, on how to measure it and it will teach you some common patterns you can use to solve them.
So yes, the study of algorithmic will make you a better programmer this I am certain of.
